Hello! (I get wordy ._.)

I’m a pretentious fifteen-year-old ready to make a change. I’ve decided that I’m done exclusively wasting time on computers with sites like youtube and facebook, and now I want to really get to know about computers and be productive and useful with one. I know it’ll take a lot longer than a few years spent on this site and those like it to get an even basic understanding of cybersecurity and it’s ilk, but I believe I’m willing to make the effort for the sake of learning. :) While being a 1337 HaXX0r L0L has its charm, I think what I really want to do is build and improve, not destroy and deface, and I think learning these basic computer skills will help me out in the long run.

So, I’ve done a bit of poking around here and a few searches (it’s a good thing I’m practically married to the search engine), and I’ve been getting the overall vibe that I need to start brushing up on scripting and coding languages for the first few challenges, namely SQL, HTML, and JavaScript. I have found the massive list of sites on the forum, as well as the Gentoomen library and I think together these two resources should give me enough info to shut me up for a while, so I don’t think I’ll be posting all too much. :c

I’m simply amazed as to how much effort these people put into compiling this information so kudos to them! :D It is admittedly overwhelming, I’ll admit, and I’m biding my time trying to wade through it all. I guess the only thing I could ask for is if there’s a good place for me to start, but I’ll try diving in and seeing where I land. The Welcome guide recommends that I start with the challenges, so I suppose I’ll do that and branch out from there, and maybe look into basic networking. The only thing I risk wasting is a bit of time, after all. I hope I come to enjoy my time here and learn something valuable. Thanks for bearing with me, and I’m sorry if this is a bit tl;dr. :U

Welcome, @twistedspoon

Glad to see you are approaching things the way you do. It’s a refreshing change from the usual “help me hack fb” or “hi frnds i need help . email hacking tricks” (sigh).

Have a look around the forum. There are a few threads discussing how to get started. My advice usually is: just do stuff. As you said, it’ll take time, but if you just keep doing stuff you are interested in, things will work out fine. Even if you feel like you wasted time, it often still adds to your experience.

There is no such thing as wasting time when you are in front of a computer.

Thank you both for the warm welcome. :) I’m sure I’ll get situated here soon enough, and I’ve already amassed a few points. I’m so far having an easy time, but one of them in particular took longer than it should have; I insisted on skimming and I overlooked the obvious. Since then I’ve learned my lesson, and the exercises have been a breeze so far, but something tells me that will change soon. :D

I see what you did there, dloser. :P I was hoping that particular person was just a troll, but some further inspection proved me otherwise. I guess a real troll would ham up the fact that his cries for attention go ignored in hopes of starting a flame war or something. How depressing. ._. That might have been me if I didn’t end up on the receiving end of a crack and if I didn’t learn (almost) proper punctuation.

Now that I’ve thought about it a little, I suppose it’s hard to truly waste time on a computer unless you spend a half hour or so at zombocom with the sound off. I don’t think anyone wins in that situation. :3

The challenges will indeed get harder as you get along and there are plenty more sites (some easy, some hard). Good luck. ;)
