I didn't know where to post this, but it is defiantly off topic.

So i own a laptop that i use for gaming, and my family has a laptop that anyone can use. If i have both of these laptops in the same place, the family one will connect to the internet way better, and i don’t understand why. My gaming computer is definitely more expensive and upgraded, but it seems to struggle to connect to the internet. When it does connect to the internet, it will be on 1-3 bars when my family laptop is always 3-4. It’s really pissing me off cause i can’t really play smite efficiently.

If the bats meaning the wi-fi signal, its depends to hardware.

You probably have a crap wireless card, just plug in an ethernet cable.

Maybe you can use wireless repeater. I’ve test already router in WDS mode and it works.

@bolofecal in my opinion using a wireless repeater to enhance wifi signal inside home is brutally overkill…. you can use it to cover long distances or to overcome obstacles that you typically don’t find inside houses.

More than probably your problems are due to misconfigurations and poor dedicated software, expecially if you are using a third-party software to manage your wifi connection… not to mention how buggy are them.

P.S.: I love when people talk about signal strength in “bars”

Maybe, I never used a repeater, I just used a WDS to increase the signal for two houses.

Well, technically speaking, you don’t always increase the signal strength with a WDS, indeed sometimes you end up approximately halving it for every configured AP…

However there are many methods to implement a wifi network, you only have to choose the more suitable for your needs… probably, in your case, it was the best solution to implement :)

So is my best cost efficient method to run a cable? Only 16, my max budget is about $100.

I would suggest that you do all the troubleshooting you can do before you buy the cable. As you said that the router is in the living room, take your laptop to the living room and connect the WiFi see if there is a difference in signal strenght. While you are in your room try and ping 8.8.8.8 continuously and copy the ping response onto a notepad then go to the living room and do the same thing and see if there is a difference in the ping response. You can also use a live linux distro to check the interent speed.

Having a cable around is never a bad thing. It’s pretty inexpensive and usually very reliable. And if everything you do fails, you can always hang yourself with it. ;)

Can’t stop laughing… :D

Well, in my opinion it all depends on what you have to do, even though having an ethernet cable is always a good thing, as @dloser said.

If your main concern of having a strong internet connectivity is for playing games, I would definitely buy an ethernet cable because it is much more reliable than a wifi connection, regardless of the signal strength.
If you mainly need it for browsing, you can try to find a way to kinda fix your current setup and squeeze the most out of your network card.

That being said, if you can afford the cost, it is definitely worth it.

Yeah, i think ethernet cable it is, a 50 ft one is under 10 dollars.

Does it mess up other people on my internet? o.o

Probably not enough for you to notice normally, but if my kids are both gaming upstairs and I’m streaming the football downstairs, it tends to buffer a bit more than I’d like.

Good to know. Thanks.
