I want to start a new social networking site

I would say games…but that’s already been built…
maybe the only thing I could say about making a “unique” social network is to make it as simple as possible…
no cheesy stuff. no bugs. a safe place for people to socialize (though I can’t say the internet is really safe)

and of course….free
and if there are updates admins should tell it to their members.

but on the business side, the site needs to earn some cash… so you’ll need to have an advert system..

the only thing that’s important is that it SHOULDN’T have a CSS editor. (lol on this one)

I think you have a lot of time bro .
It will be a great head ache for you making a social networking site . I’ve also tried doing so but literally after two weeks i got frustated working alone .

If you still want to give it a go do ensure that you are making the site with a group .

Now about some unique ideas i think you should try to make the site a lot like hackthis.co.uk. you know it should have a friendly environment and the site should be simple !!!!!!!

@ IAmDevil , Thanks dude for the advice, I am doing the site as a group and I have around 2-3 months time to do it. I also like the user interface of hackthis.co.uk and I will adapt some of the features of this site for sure :)

Chat systems are very common in SN sites(though they are inevitable), I need something different and unique.

verry hard to make unique,but…
-simple but atractive design(good colors,good elements positions,etc for makeing eyes feels good)
-not messy(to user can know where is what)
-chat(2man or more mans)(2in1)
-space(why not,let’s go say lvl1 users can upload anything max 500mb,biger lvl users(who pay)more memory)
-security
-no classic ads(no invasion of ads),cuz there’s numbers way to get money without destroying mind of users cuz of ads
-ranks
-virtual money($ per profile visited)money can later be used for games,or memory space etc etc
-forums(user can subscribe 0,1 or more categoryes (specialised)(can be about hacking,programing,for womans, etc etc)

Voorm has so very good points :) about the Dislike option its not a bad idea but depends what for and also having it like this website with < 0 > and NOT like facebook “Like” button. Good luck and hope you use most of the idea’s

‘Stars’ rating is better.It’s unusual but atractive.
So you have up to 5 options.(detailed rating)

The stars idea is a great idea better then the Like - Dislike :)

Voorm good points, I think it will be cool with funny emotions that will make it fun and exciting

I think you should keep ranks for different criteria like -

1. Rank for most number of visits and a special position for the leader.

2. Creating groups like some people can make their own separate groups and can compete in different games .

3. You should try and make a “CONFESSION PAGE” . Everyone has a confession to make right . So here everyone can make any confession (like any secret crush on someone , any mischief done during school , etc ) . And also the admin of the SN website can choose any confession he likes and also keep the users identity safe.

4. IAmDevil

One feature I like but is rarely implemented is tagging an update/post with an emotion. Then you could filter someones updates by happy, sad, indifferent etc posts.

Just like flabby said , but you should make a system which will automatically post them under happy , sad ……….

The system should make decision that under which emotion to post the message depending on the words used in the post !!!
