Pentesters | Defend the Web

Hello everyone,
I would like to know how many people here are working as pentesters or in the internet security.
I would like to become a pentester. I’m studying a lot of areas
- Languages: C, Assembly, Python, PHP,Bash…
- Network protocols
I ’m trying to get as much informations as I can, reading Books and zines like THE ART OF EXPLOITATION which I think is really cool,2600 and Phrack.
I’m also learning how to use Backtrack , Kali, and just discovered metasploit.
So if you know something about pentesting can you tell me if I’m on the good way, give me some advices and tell me how you did it yourself?

I work alot with backtrack 5 and pen testing :)

When solving problems, dig at the roots instead of just hacking at the leaves.

Im a pentester in my spare time, I’ve found Kali a great tool and a great new evolution from BT. My friend posted this LINK Its a start.

How I got to pentesting:
1. I was always interested in computer security
2. Got a bachelors degree on software engineering
3. Work as a dev while reading and practicing pentesting and theory of security
4. found a job ad looking for pen testers
5. applied for it

Reading is good. Practicing is good too. I’d say that you are going to the right direction, but if it’s possible, try to obtain a degree in comp. sciences. A degree will:
1. give you a good all-around picture of computers
2. make you more interesting as a recruit

Edit: Just one more point:
Don’t do illegal hacking. Sure, some of the great hackers have been caught and they currently work as white hats. But remember that if you are caught, you could just go to jail. In addition, depending on where you live, you can’t participate in some pen testing projects if you have a criminal record..

@DaMage, well put, that is the direction that i am headed in as well. is there anything other than computer science that i would need to be a pen-tester? like a CEH certificate, or anything like that?

Certificates help, but they are a bit expensive… My employer paid mine ;)

no doubt let me set everything up at some point ill rent a cheap vps and set up some war games for you guys if you want ill fund the server costs but im going to need good security help as i never have done this is anyone interested in helping?
