I think (as in guessing wildly) that this means the server couldn’t connect to the database. Which would happen when many people visit the page at the same time.

If that’s the case, then this is approximately how the code producing the error would like (someone might care, you never know)
$link = mysql_connect('localhost', 'user', 'pass'); if (!$link) { die('Errors everywhere, the ship is going down. Run for your lives!!!!'); }
