Mind Hacks
Progress in embedded systems will soon make possible the facts narrated in the novels of William Gibson:
But without going too far into the future is now possible to hack the system “mind” with techniques such as neuro-linguistic programming or mentalism:
Do you think that this will be the new frontier of hacking?

The human mind/Brain is the most complex thing known. We have only scratched the surface. Many/I believe we will know everything else before we completely understand ourselves. Having said that, I do believe we will be able to interface machine/computers and ourselves, in the not to distanced future (occurring now). There are things were good at and things machines do much better, why not the best of both. As far as I know, Linguistic programming or mentalism is about emotions response to stimuli not real programming, but I could be wrong. The hallmark of the human race is rational thinking!
I’d rather see folks doubt what’s true than accept what isn’t.
NLP argues that you can change your mental and emotional patterns of behavior learned through experience (“programming”). The change can be achieved by imitating (“modeling”) precisely the behaviors of successful people.
Richard Bandler, one of the founders of NLP, has argued that human beings are literally programmable.
NLP is considered a pseudo-science, but, in my opinion, is a first attempt of Mind Hacking.

guuf,
If mentalism is about the emotional responses to stimuli, and programming is about writing code that responds accordingly, could we not call this response stimuli? Stimulus evokes a specific functional reaction or a thing that arouses activity or energy in someone or something. So, this something could be a program that was made to react to a specific function. Who is to say there is a lack of emotions within? Although I do enjoy a good intellectual debate on the human brain, and the comparisons it has with the computers we have built I have to say you are correct in saying that we have only scratched the surface of what we think the human mind is capable of.
Toxic Waste, I fully agree with what you say. We have only scratched the surface of the complexity of our minds. The neurosciences are studying, through modern scanning systems and computational models, the way in which our brain responds and collecting evidence to allow us to understand the architecture of our brain and how it is drawn. An interesting book on the subject is the best seller of T. Stafford and M. Webb, “Mind Hacks”. Another book that illustrates in an ironic way how our minds can be easily exploited is “Why The Toast Always Lands Butter Side Down” by Richard Robinson. Happy reading!

I know this isnt on the same level as what your talking about but the way derren brown uses subliminal messaging is a sort of mind hack.

I am Italian and recently a digital channel is proposing the series “The tricks of the mind” of Derren Brown. I’ve only seen a few episodes but it’s really interesting! Some say that D. Brown uses techniques borrowed from NLP. However, he is really good at combining typical techniques of illusionism with others such as cognitive psychology, hypnosis and reading body language.
REALLY FUNNY!

“People who doesn’t work hard doesn’t have the right to be envious of the people with talent. People fail because they don’t understand the hard work necessary to be successful.”
In the television series “The Mentalist”, the protagonist Patrick Jane uses his mentalist particular talent to help the team at the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). I do not know if FBI uses these techniques to investigate suspected but there is no doubt that if similar techniques will never be developed their first use will be in the “warfare”. Don’t you think?
A GIANT PROBE IS EXPLORING OUR BRAIN … LOL :o)
P.S.: Even my English is not the best but for this there is Google Translate :o) LoL
