What are people doing to make hacker a good word
I just read an article talking about diploma mills, and saying the people who set them up are hackers. It never got more into why they said hackers, but I think it’s because too many knows it as a bad word.
Like many, I’m tired of seeing the word hacker used as a bad word. So my question is, do you have any stories of people or groups trying to make hacker into a good word? If so, please share
Hacker shouldn’t be used as a bad word !

Awesome man. I love the PBS thing you linked. Too bad the views on it is pretty low.
As everyone knows, I try to teach people on my YouTube channel on how to take the given skills to protect your own stuff. Sadly, YouTube is acting stupid and they took down peoples videos for much less than what I’m doing.
The problem with posting on those other places is eyes and money.
Many sites like vimeo require the uploader to pay if they want to upload a given amount in a given time. On top of this, it’s very hard to find a video site that you can make money from that doesn’t charge the user to just watch the stuff.
As far as having your own server. That’s 10 times worst. Not only you have to bring people to the site to ONLY view your stuff. You have to find a way to make a ton and a half of $ to keep up everything.
Keep in mind, my content is literally viewed in every country. On the high end I will have 13,847 min of stuff watched on my YouTube channel a day (about 10 and a half days of watch time in 1 good day). On an average day I’m looking at 4,000 views. So you will need some major equipment to keep terabytes of videos, a fast server for people to view it on, a pipe that allows a lot of people to view it (and those numbers are just going to get higher and higher), and so on.
There is a reason why no one is competing against YouTube, and why Google had to buy them out to keep YouTube alive.
Because some KIDS may run across this and say something stupid like you shouldn’t be in it for the money. I feel like I have to mention that nothing is free, and you will always have to pay in some way. The fact is, the gear I use in the videos I make, the stuff to record, the videos going against my data cap, lights, the lab, etc. All that cost thousands per thing.
There is no way in hell an average joe is going to be able to show half of what I do. And that’s why I try to show the user how to do things for free if possible.
No problem. I think a lot of people would be more than happy to leave YouTube. But, I don’t think there is going to be a company that even comes close to replacing YouTube any time soon.
thank you ! and just keep doing what you like :)
For the main conversation of this topic i remember some French TV shows where they were talking about white hat hackers. but the little kids and scriptkiddies (French 14 years old men) plays to attack them with DOS websites for example… it’s not easy to find some French smart young people… I’m not French, I’m Swiss :)
Some of you may have already read this article. Hacking car electronics isn’t something new, yet for people who are incompetent in IT world and watch TV this was brought as something incredible and new. But I am a big fan of this guy. After Anonymous movement hacks this guy made people rethink definition of hacker.

Also if we talk about the meaning of the word:
Here is a story I just made up to make my point.
For example, I am visiting local bar. I enter into a pub where there are lot of people. I don’t have money with me. I see tourists in the end of line. I join them. Start friendly chat. Meanwhile, while talking I somehow manage to get in front of them in the line. As they don’t speak my language I tell bartender that they will pay for my drinks (bartender saw me talking with them, smiling, etc.). I take the drinks and leave the pub. I have “hacked” my way into getting free drinks. The end.
First of all, most people won’t recognize so called hacker or hacking as outside-IT-world thing. It’s been always categorized as something to do with technology.
Second of all.. Hacking itself is using voulnerabilities to get the wanted result. In real life, in technological world etc. Even if the result is just to fin the holes and fix them, the root of this word will always stand for the definition. We as humans, have agreed to use this specific word for the specific meaning.
I guess all I wanted to say is that hacking is ideology.. a way of thinking. So the hacker is.. nothing but human being gathering information with his eyes, nose, ears, touch, etc. and then processing it with this ideology.
Also, look at this website. Green and black colors. Our favorite movies such as Matrix have shaped this wrong idea of hacking. Our parents have put wrong ideas. We believe the wrong people. We as society follow each other as sheeps. “He didn’t die, so I won’t die”. All we need to do is to hack our way throught the life the best way possible. And also don’t forget to enjoy it.
Anyway, hacker or not, we should instead talk about ethics, loyality and honesty. How to hack ourselves to become better person.
Sorry for typos, english is not my native lang.
@ERGY13 I would like to see the video.
Btw.. the Finish goverment have made IT lessons as compulsory in all the schools. The wrong idea about this is to integrate youth into IT world, not to teach them new ways of thinking. Basically they are making hordes of new consumers, as the IT market is growing each second.
i think too, we are in a not-thinking society. In watch_dogs, the hacker group was saying we have too much informations in same time. i agree. this is not only in Finland were we are only consumers… and making IT lessons is bad for the IT support. “They’re stealing our work !!” (cf : “Ils nous volent notre travail !”)
Oh yes. I’ve seen this one. :) Thanks for sharing it tho'
Of course we are. But when you grow up you make choices based on what you have learned in past until the present moment. The sad thing is that these kind of lessons with that kind of perspective will create more zombies. Everything will be automated… humans too. Automated to ear money and spend it. But this is offtopic..
I do agree with the last quote.
it’s funny to see what way we can start with a serious question based on IT-hackers public image, followed by a youtube channel and a hippie anti-society chat :)
but without IT-hackers we could not have performing and well-thinked programs like we have… It could be a good thing… (i’m an IT student)
a good hacker doesn’t give a damn about ethics. hacking is about know well something for the sake of knowing it, understand it. “our crime is that of curiosity”
there is no place for ethic in that imho

@1337boy I didn’t say hacker must have ethics.
Anyway, hacker or not, we should instead talk about ethics, loyality and honesty. How to hack ourselves to become better person.
My posts were meant as invitation to think about social structure, to start thinking with your own head and forget the name “hacker”.
You should read before you post @1337boy (no offense) Anyway. yes, you are right. The first post was in topic, the rest - off the topic. And everything you wrote was offtopic too. :)

i read lol i just say that your invitation is something different regarding the subject of the topic and maybe it should be talked in a different thread
WaRWolFz crew
yeah i was not attacking you sorry if it looked like this
i was saying that since you were introducing a different topic (and an interesting one!) maybe it deserved its own thread, while keeping this about the OP
i think that
hacking
hackers' culture
hacking mentality
are very different things and are being mixed up easily

oO
You are essentially saying that knowledge trumps everything. So what if a few people died! At least I now know how to play flappybird without paying for it!
Ethics are essential to everyone, especially those with power.
Without ethics , this world cannot function . Everyone need to have some kind of ethics .
About the word hacker : now a days i can see that this word is used for good practices too . Like Hackathon events .
In most hackathons tag line says “ Inviting all hackers ” etc etc . So what i am trying to say is people are finally understanding that hacker is someone who is good at something that he likes .
JAYSSJ11- “I’d rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.”

If only everyone know about this :(

Hacking is a tool, like a gun is a tool. A hacker is a person using the tool called hacking, like a shooter is using a tool like a gun.
Like guns, hacking is looked as a bad thing because media and a number of bad people. But in reality, you have many more hackers and shooters that are using the tool for good. For example, the shooter that is hunting to feed their family. Or the hacker trying to make a system more secure or finding bad people.
So there is ethics in hacking. But like most things in life, one side tends to be much much louder than the other.
As others have said, you have to have ethics in most things. Keep in mind, most IT jobs is to make a system so good, that people get laid off. In the real world, a lot of people will keep a system good enough so half a company doesn’t get fired or the entire company
(keep in mind, because you want something to be perfect or you want to learn something. That could be enough holdup to tank a company)
Using guns / hacking comparison is really good!
Ethics is sure something really important, despite not a lot of people do know this word
