how can i protect my computer
Anti-virus , firewall and paranoia is good options to avoid worms, when you use a vpn or proxy your isp wont be able to see your browsing activity (encrypted connection of course ), note that the vpn or proxy provider might be able to see what you do(dependent on provider policy and your own precaution ) Tor is a good way to hide yourself. It just occurred to me that you could have done a quick google search for this (guess i am an idiot for typing then realizing ) .Or you are a troll…
I personally didn’t use an anti-virus for over 5 years, I had 0 infections over those years. It’s really just using the internet with common sense. But if you’re on a shared computer, an AV can do some miracles.
@Pinkyponyprincess: ssl only encrypts the data, and not the sender/receiver? Correct me if I’m wrong, it’s been a while :D You’re correct about the proxy/vpn though, your receiver/sender in the packet header will be different.
allemage:some anti virus software also has behavior blocking, thus if something malicious like a virus or worm isn’t in the database it still detects it if it is acting strange(probably still not 100% safe) .
gudgip: I DONT KNOW gudgip, i was thinking more of a customized encryption method rather than ssl .
Microsoft security essentials is pre installed on window 8 machines , i personally dont trust it , but its probablly ok for everyday use ,
as for suggestions on proxy/vpn check out this THREAD .
I run software that I do not trust in a virtual machine. In this virtual machine I use sandboxie and run these applications from within the sandboxed environment.
/dev/null
