Hi, i know a few people who have had their BT landline hacked, mine was hacked i got a phone call from someone calling as the police he said ring the number on the back of your card i rang however the same person picked up i wouldve have fell for it however it was a bit fishy that the person has the exact same deep tone, same acent everything and i started asking questions i knew he couldnt answer so he panicked and put the phone down. i doubt it was redirected i think he was their the whole time and made it sound like i was actuallly ringing the bank, a guy i know done the same thing in front of me but wouldnt tell me how he did it. how the hell do they do this? a guy posted a similar question but had no answer, can someone please answer this for me
thank you.

@saad.waseem : By BT you mean British Telecom right or is it something else.

This works because the scammer does not put the phone down. Until the person making the call has put their phone down the line is still open (this is a legacy thing left over from when people used to forward calls). So you put your phone down and then when you pick it up again to ring your bank you are actually still on the line the scammer. All they need to do is play a dial tone and pretend to answer the phone as the bank.

The best way to avoid this is to either use a different phone to make the call or wait longer than 5 minutes before calling. There is a timeout of around 5 minutes … I can’t remember exactly.

Does this make sense? I have always thought it is quite a neat trick.

Yeah 100% on that Flabbyrabbit, that is quite an old trick that still works today. There was a time when you could tap out the number you wanted to ring in an older type phone box and get through for no cost. the zero was ten taps the 9 nine taps and so on. But it won’t work now-a-days. Shame! lol :) Now you need a tone dialer and that don’t always work either!

Yeah british telecom init, so flabby rabbit they can do it with any phone or are their any set backs involved like any limitations? what if the person who is recieving the fone call presses the hang up button a few times does this still mean they are still connected? sorry lol i want to know the inns and outs of how these clever shits do it

I believe it works if the scammer is ringing from a landline, mobile phones work differently. And no I don’t think you can do anything to cut them off.

@IAmDevil The idea is to trick the victim into believing they are talking to the bank, seeing as they dialled the number themselves who wouldn’t believe it. Then they can extract personal information.
