Welcome @jakes22, as the others have suggested you can try doing the levels on this site. If your stuck or don’t quite understand anything feel free to post or look through the forums to learn how to do things.

As for other sites you can try Hack This Site! It’s similar to this site as it has levels and forums, but with my experience I’ve found it’s harder to get help on things there.

Welcome man :) hope you having fun, yes I’m a programmer, but trust me when I tell you I’ve learn here a lot of things, and this site with those awesome people made me think different beside thinking outside the box.

Play around, work hard (don’t just ask until you’re sure you have no other ideas…maybe even sleep on problems for a while) and don’t forget Google (or your other preferred search engine) is you best friend as a hacker. Also, on this site, the forums. If none of these work, ask someone around here for some clues. You will surely get them. Lots of friendly folks around.

I joined this site 1 year ago (1 and 4 months actually, i think) and came here knowing nothing but some basic programming i learned in high school. Now i’m ranked 8 on this site (although i bet i’m not even in the 20s if we take real skills and not just the levels). So if i could learn, you can too!

So new to the term Hacking? So google about hacking and see what hacking actually means. And before starting off with the levels on this site learn basic html and understand whats source code! :)

To start off as basichttp://www.w3schools.com/ will give you some background on what is HTML, Javascript, SQL… http://www.codecademy.com/ is another great place to learn basic programming languages.
Finally, if you need any help, feel free to ask. We don’t bite. ;)
