Badges promoting spam?

I thought I would spam the forum in order to ask the general opinion on forum spam (see what I did there? ;) )

Am I the only one who feels that awarding badges for ‘forum participation’ promotes low quality posting and many ‘yeah I agree with you’ or ‘good link, thanks!’ or ‘please close your topic if it has answered your question!’ posts?

I think a better idea would be ‘x number of upvoted posts’ Give that karma a reason for being there, and try to promote QUALITY posting

Just my two cents.

I was reading something today that made me think the same thing. To summarize:
[] Medal only count posts with positive karma
[
] Users with negative karma can earn the medal

Medal only count posts with positive karma
I think a bit of a reduction may be needed in this case. 1000 posts isn’t easy. 1000 posts with positive karma is harder still.
This said, it could work on overall karma.

So 1000 karma for the medal instead of 1000 posts. In this case, posts can gain more than 1 karma so maybe only 500-750 well-placed messages are needed for such an award. Still not easy, but the goal is not to change the difficulty - more a case of helping to keep the forums clean.

How about only include posts with neutral or positive karma? This introduces the problem of a single/group of members down voting all posts by a given user to stop them gaining medals. Allowing users the ability to influence another users score is open to abuse.

True, but in order to gain this ability they would need 100 posts themselves.

This could have the same effect :) Maybe we need some sort of ‘reason’ when downvoting which is compulsory.
Downvote Reason: Spam is a pretty obvious one.
Still, it is all open to suggestion :)

Hmm… so that means all my [s]spams[/s] efforts will go invain! :/ But i’ll get over it.
I don’t think the post medal plays a very useful role and also isn’t that important too. May be it was created to make forums a more active place, so as that goal has been achieved then its time to change. So as @sabretooth said changing it to a 1000 karmas can prove to be effective in reducing the spam/useless posts.

Great sabre (though i’m not very happy) ! :)

Currently three people 100 with two of those having over 200 karma. Look at the list of top karma users I feel we might need to tweak some more rules.

Probably some values would need to be changed I agree :)

@flabbyrabbit: Remember @rekcah.ronoh’s case when he gave himself a lot of positive karma for nothing? I mean, everyone (at that time) knew that karma points did not give anything to users. I am pretty sure if HackThis!! rewards medals based on users' karma points, the system will be heavily abused.

@freewind1012 Well the original post wasn’t about a replacement with a karma badge as such, it was more a case of the whole x posts thing being a reason to spam and I have seen certain users (which I won’t name) recently post on every topic going with very little to add to them :)

We are basically talking about a way in which the purpose of introducing a feature isn’t abused…Focusing on Karma is as problematic as total emphasis on post count !!
Its basically about finding a middle way so that things may be in hand !!

Yes exactly as @freewind1012 said that matter escalated a bit with all the possible reasons why and how that boost in karmas took place. So I think to counter that problem the number of posts required to achieve the power to give karma should be increased maybe to 80~100 posts so that would check that all the users who create multiple accounts in order to just gain karma. That would make it tougher.
And also there should be a limit for how much maximum karmas can a post have and should limited to 10.

@IAmDevil I believe @roun512 is talking about
Am I the only one who feels that awarding badges for ‘forum participation’ promotes low quality posting and many ‘yeah I agree with you’ or ‘good link, thanks!’ or ‘please close your topic if it has answered your question!’ posts?
@IAmDevil Sorry for not being too clear :) He didn’t mean my post. (I hope :P ) I think he meant that posts such as:
‘good link, thanks!’ with nothing extra to add (post-count booster) and ‘please close your topic if it has answered your question!’ should be considered spam.

I agree with this view btw.
