Someone actually went to a defense conference, and sniff almost everything. All he had to do is make a free WiFi spot.

I dont know much about hacking and I still think its extremely complicated…

..but sometimes hacking can be that simple :o?

Most of the time it’s simple.

This is called a man in the middle attack. Basically, he set up the WiFi hotspot and everyone connected to it. Since all data as to pass through his system to get on the network, he can just sit back and collect the data (being in the middle between the person sending and getting).

My fav man in the middle attack is ARP Poisoning

@Loloop

I couldn’t believe so either.

I did a course on cryptography and as @crua9 said, basically they give the hacker the data. Thinking he is legit.

It is funny though, he could set up, offer the service. And I bet not one person asked who he was or asked to check an ID. Such is the world we live in = )

this is a very well known attack, the point was more that it works on security experts as well

Hmm, that’s interesting… why would someone, connected to an open wifi network, browse websites sending sensitive data? expecially at a security and defense conference :s

Most people don’t know, or care how their data is transmitted between their devices and the internet, they just assume it will be secure and connect without thinking, anyway they have an anti virus so everything will be fine lol.

Haha awesome!
Yeah, you are right, absolutely… the thing is that this is something you wouldn’t expect from a “security expert” or at least from a wannabe expert :)

Often, all I have had to do to get friends to care is show them how Man In The Middle Framework works. After seeing their login cookies get stolen, their browser hooked or the images on the internet turned upside down, they start to care a little more.
