Books and other materials to better understand hacking

I’m not sure if this is the place to post this. Please move to correct section, if not.

After visiting DEFCON’s site 2 days ago, it really struck me as odd that we don’t have a part of this forum dedicated to providing links or at least plaintext suggestions regarding different relevant information concerning hacking (Be it “How to"s or historical stuff).

I decided we probably should have such things, as it helps in better understanding what we are doing.

So I am going to start first by recommending 2 such books:

The art of deception - K. Mitnick
Approaching Zero: The Extraordinary Underworld of Hackers, Phreakers, Virus Writers, And Keyboard Criminals - Paul Mungo & Bryan Clough

(I have both in .mobi format. Might upload them somewhere, later today. 2nd one is also free on the web, if you want it).

I will edit my first post with titles from your posts as you give them, in order to keep a clear list, that’s easy to find. Also, I will TRY not to post duplicates :) If i do, please tell me.

List:
The art of deception - K. Mitnick

Approaching Zero: The Extraordinary Underworld of Hackers, Phreakers, Virus Writers, And Keyboard Criminals - Paul Mungo & Bryan Clough

Violent Python

The Cuckoo’s Egg: Tracking a Spy Through the Maze of Computer Espionage - Clifford Stoll.

The hackers underground handbook

Hackers Handbook

Hacking For Beginners - a beginners guide for learning ethical hacking
Metasploit_Pentesting_Guide
Hacking_Art_of_Exploitation
Hacking_Art_of_Exploitation 2
Shellcoders_Handbook_2 (I don’t have the Ist part )
Grey_Hat_Hacking
CEHv7
(to be continued)

I don’t know about the upload part, it depends on the file’s license and stuff like that.

I was thinking of providing links, the uploading won’t be done from this site. Don’t know if that’s legal or not. If not, you could always just provide titles. That way neither you nor the site itself would be harmed in any way. As I said, the second book I mentioned is supposed to have been free. Just google the name and you’ll find it :P

Good idea @Fireshard , That would be better….I’ll just provide the titles then !!

Not really an idol…just a very good old-school hacker that started writing his experiences…

So, how about those books?

I only like books which has good and many examples which helps me understand the concept much better. So if some one has a good eBook for JavaScript with some good examples please share.

I don’t enjoy tutorial books at all. But books that cover concepts and ideas are great.

This is a good book for trying out python and network attacks. Violent Python.

I’d also suggest reading The Cuckoo’s Egg which details the events of a hacker from the guy trying to stop him’s point of view. A true story.

Ok something I really like: The hackers underground handbook. Really good talks a lot about different things that I’ve found quite useful

I’ll have to look that up. There is another which was my first book, and that was “Hackers Handbook” which is an awesome starting point.

Yup…so , I have got some books….Don’t know if someone else mentioned any of them….but I’ll mention all that I have :
1. Hacker’s Handbook
2. Hacking For Beginners - a beginners guide for learning ethical hacking
3. Metasploit_Pentesting_Guide
4. Hacking_Art_of_Exploitation
5. Hacking_Art_of_Exploitation 2
6. Shellcoders_Handbook_2 (I don’t have the Ist part :( )
7. Grey_Hat_Hacking
8. CEHv7
This is the latest addition to my collection , given to me by one of my favourite friends :
9. Violent_Python_A_Cookbook_for_Hackers_Forensic_Ana
So , that ends my collection of some really good books which I study , whenever I get time (though I really don’t get enough time for them ) . But still , I love reading them :)
The first two books are really good for beginners….I think they should read them :)
So , thats it !!
Thank you all :)
